Island hopping: Giudecca, San Giorgio, San Servolo and San Lazzaro degli Armeni

Other cities have suburban sprawls; Venice has primordial monasteries floating in teal-blue waters, former hopitals now converted to universities and parks, mental asylums, quarantine islands, convents for wayward nuns and industrial districts nowadays hosting art galleries or hotels.
Giudecca Island, once an aristocratic retreat and later the city's industrial center up to the beginning of the 20th century, hosted a very illustrious exile in 1529: Michelangelo. In recent years, the large abandoned spaces attracted a new set of exiles: artists, who could no longer afford rents in central venice for their lofts and studios.
San Giorgio island is standing out the blue lagoon waters with the white istrian stones of its church designed by Palladio.
Despite the exotic palms, San Servolo island has long sent a chill down venetian spines, serving as it did as the city's main insane asylum from the 18th century until 1978 and now it is hosting the Venice International university and a peaceful park.
San Lazzaro degli Armeni, once the site of a benedectine hospice for pilgrims nd then a leper colony and since 1717 became home to the monastery of the Mekhitarists, an Armenian Catholic congregation.
