BAIRRO ALTO 500 Years of the Foundation Cultural Walk

The Bairro Alto was born in response to major social and economic changes that took place in Lisbon from the 2nd half of the fifteenth century. Commercial development promoted population growth of the city, forcing the urban sprawl outside the Fernandina wall; this was a phenomenon that led to the urbanization of land to flank the doors of Santa Catarina. Built in orthogonal plane from the early sixteenth century, it was known as Vila Nova de Andrade.

Since its founding in 1513 the streets were designed and built, the alleys , convents and churches, palaces for the nobility , houses for the population. In this journey through the living history of the district, we will meet the varied archaeological and architectural heritage, convents and churches , palaces, crafts, freemasonry , newspapers , personalities of literature, music, theater, fado and the bohemian without forgetting the people who live and bring to life the traditions of the Bairro Alto.

First, came the people connected to the sea, after that the Jesuits and behind them the nobility in their coaches . The Bairro Alto has escaped the earthquake and the fate filled the streets. The Salazar led the district to close, and only in the late 70s, the new generations have found a place of transgression and escape. It became fashionable and it never left. Today is one of the business cards of Lisbon.
